Watercolour acid damage

Acid damage Cambridge BEFORE

Paper artworks and documents often have damage created by the frame they reside in. This is due to the acidity of the surrounding mount and backing board, as well as tape and other adhesives which were used in the original framing process.

Professional paper restoration

Our ICON accredited paper conservator is able to restore many types of paper damage, but his most frequent treatment is the removal of acidic backing board and adhesives.

An artwork or document which has been affected can be gently washed in a tailored solution, lifting the dark contamination whilst preserving the original image or text.

In many cases the results are truly remarkable, bringing new life back to the piece as well as stability.

Available treatments include:

  • Restoration of stained or visually disturbed areas
  • Flattening of cockled, warped or folded paper
  • Gentle removal of old mounts and frames
  • Restoration of torn or broken areas
  • New lining with acid-free materials
  • Safe removal of paper that is adhered to the glass

Frame damage

Frame damage may also occur due to a loose mount, allowing the paper to slip and become distorted. Artworks lacking efficient barriers from the glass can stick to the surface.

If a frame is not properly installed or has a weak hanging mechanism, it may fall from height leading to further damage due to tears, creasing, and the impact of broken glass fragments.

All of these issues and the resulting damage to paper can be resolved by our paper conservator.

Frames can either be repaired by our frame conservators or new options can be provided.

Conservation framing

Our team specialises in conservation-friendly framing, including the use of pH-neutral materials.

This will prevent any acidic yellowing or darkening of the paper in the future and ensure that it is safe for years to come.

We also offer UV protective glazing options to allow your artwork to return to display in the confidence that it is secure and well-preserved.

Frame Restoration

How much will my restoration cost?

Although my print was badly degraded by the artist's use of double-sided tape and an acidic backing mount, it had great emotional significance for me. It felt like a risky leap of faith to send it as I had not used Fine Art Restoration Company before. It came back immaculate and transformed, returned to its original condition and with no discernable damage to the subtle graphite drawing. The company were reassuring and returned it with no hassle. Highly recommended.

We sent in a very mouldy print that came back probably in better condition than when it was bought! We were constantly updated as to the status of the restoration and the service was impeccable. We had previously sent in a small oil painting for cleaning that now hangs in pride of place. Both had sentimental value of familiar places. I can highly recommend the quality of the work and the fantastic customer service.
