Terracotta Horseman before restoration

Our team has worked with a wide variety of terracotta ceramics, including ancient ornaments and historic vases.

Popular earthenware restored by our conservator includes:

  • Staffordshire pottery
  • Tang dynasty figurines
  • Saint-Porchaire ware
  • Majolica
  • Wedgwood creamware
  • Lusterware
  • Raku
  • Sancai

You can read a full article on the history and restoration of tin-glazed pottery such as maiolica and delftware here and a further article on terracotta care here.

Our team has specialist experience in the restoration of Tang Dynasty tomb figures or ornamental sculptures which have lost limbs or have a breakage to the neck.

Broken terracotta

It is important to keep all fragments following a breakage, this allows our team to fully restore an item with as much historic and artistic integrity as possible. When pieces are missing, our ceramics conservator can recreate any missing areas to bring back stability. We can also include metal pins to strengthen weak areas prone to continued damage.

As well as restoring breakages, our ceramics conservator can also provide the following:

  • Removal of glues, staples and tape from an amateur or historic repairs
  • Revival of colour to a historically appropriate standard
  • New cases and stands for safe display

Ceramic restoration aims for as much of a seamless result where possible, including the use of conservation-safe adhesives that will not fail or yellow with age.

How much will my object restoration cost?

Disaster when my dog knocked the table over and smashed a family heirloom. Fine Art Restoration Company to the rescue. I could not have asked for a better service. They collected the item, mended it invisibly and returned it on time.

We are very pleased with the careful and considered restoration of our wooden sculpture. The repaired sections blend seamlessly and the original colours and styling have been matched. It has all been cleaned and looks a treat! From the initial contact, accurate quote and timescale, regular updates, couriering and the accomplished work itself, it was a professional service from start to finish.
