Japanese lacquerware

Both antique and modern furniture may benefit from the restoration of lacquer areas, as not only does this bring back the original shine of the piece, but offers a greater level of protection against scratches, staining and moisture damage.

Damaged or perishing lacquer can be sensitively removed and replaced by our furniture experts, who can tailor the finishes to suit the style or era.

This type of finish can be often found on table legs, as well as Asian lacquerware and European copies – usually referred to as Japanning. These may use traditional lacquer, which is an organic substance, giving a high shine and a sealed surface. You can find out more about Japanese lacquerware here.

If you have a piece of furniture that could benefit from the restoration of lacquer due to deterioration or discolouration, please contact our helpful team for further advice, an assessment and details of treatments available from our furniture experts.
