Fold damage

Watercolours, prints, posters, photographs and maps are some of the most commonly affected by fold damage. 

This is usually caused in storage when an artwork or document is rolled, squeezed, bent or unevenly placed. 

Ripples may also be caused by moisture absorption and be the result of past water damage.

All of these issues can be resolved with sensitive conservation treatments followed by secure framing options for ongoing safety.

Professional paper restoration

Our team recommend getting in touch as soon as possible to restore fold or crease damage, as the bend in the paper will encourage the continuous loss of surrounding pigment of ink over time.

Our conservator is able to offer the following treatments:

  • Flattening of creased or folded paper
  • Safe removal of old and failing mounts
  • Stabilisation of pigments or ink
  • Removal of staining and discolouration
  • Safe removal of adhesives
  • Retouching of lost pigments or ink

Flaking or unstable ink or paint can be consolidated to prevent further loss of original pigment. The paper can be relined onto acid-free tissue to add further strength.

Although my print was badly degraded by the artist's use of double-sided tape and an acidic backing mount, it had great emotional significance for me. It felt like a risky leap of faith to send it as I had not used Fine Art Restoration Company before. It came back immaculate and transformed, returned to its original condition and with no discernable damage to the subtle graphite drawing. The company were reassuring and returned it with no hassle. Highly recommended.

We sent in a very mouldy print that came back probably in better condition than when it was bought! We were constantly updated as to the status of the restoration and the service was impeccable. We had previously sent in a small oil painting for cleaning that now hangs in pride of place. Both had sentimental value of familiar places. I can highly recommend the quality of the work and the fantastic customer service.
