Ink & Pencil Drawing Restoration
Both antique and modern drawings are sensitive to their environment, facing deterioration from fluctuating humidity, direct sunlight and acidic staining. We can restore pencil and ink from all eras with safe and effective results.Â
Drawings in our studio have included everything from old master studies and Victorian portraits to modern sketches and contemporary art.
Our paper conservator is on hand to restore many levels of damage, from visual disturbances through to completely torn and creased artworks.
We can treat a wide range of mediums including graphite, bistre, iron gall, sepia and modern ink.
What can we restore?
- Foxing and discolouration
- Tears, folds and creasing
- Water damage and mould growth
- Fire, nicotine and smoke damage
- Acidic mount and frame related issues
Our team steps in to ensure the preservation of drawings whether they have a historical, cultural or personal importance.
Protective framing
To prevent fading or acidic damage, our specialist technicians can provide conservation-appropriate framing solutions. This includes the use of materials with low pH levels to eliminate the risk of severe yellowing discolouration and decay.
We can also provide bespoke mount finishes, including washlines that suit the era and style of your artwork.
UV protection
Ink is especially vulnerable to UV rays, with direct sunlight exposure leading to fading or colour distortion. UV protective glazing for new or existing frames is available to prevent drawings from deteriorating, this is always recommended for the ongoing safety of any artwork on paper.
