“My Mother Is Truly Back” Restoring a Sentimental Oil Portrait

Family portraits often hold far more than artistic value. They become custodians of family history, preserving the faces, personalities and stories of the people who shaped our lives.

When our team was approached about a portrait of a mother painted in 1930, the goal was not simply to improve the condition of an aged painting. The hope was to see her as she was remembered – vibrant, expressive and full of life. 

Through specialist portrait conservation and careful restoration, our conservators were able to reveal details that had been obscured for decades, helping an important family heirloom take its rightful place once again at the heart of the family home.

A Mother’s Portrait

Painted in 1930 when the sitter was just 29 years old, the artwork was one of several family portraits documenting an important chapter in the family’s history. The collection included portraits of parents and grandparents, some of which had previously been exhibited at prestigious institutions, making the paintings both historically and personally significant.

Despite being carefully looked after over the years, the portrait had begun to change. An old varnish layer had developed a yellow cast and distracting surface lines, obscuring the clarity and vibrancy of the original painting. In certain lighting conditions, the sitter’s face appeared lined and dulled, masking the youthful expression captured by the artist nearly a century earlier.

What made this project particularly special was the emotional connection attached to the portrait. Throughout conversations with our team, stories emerged about family history, cherished memories and the hope that the painting would continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

“She may eventually join the next generation of relatives… in any case this will let me enjoy her at her best while she’s with me. She would like that!”

Understanding the Painting’s Condition

Following collection and a detailed studio assessment, our conservators identified several issues affecting the painting’s appearance.

The portrait had previously been cut down from a larger canvas and had undergone historic restoration work. A thick, discoloured varnish layer was muting the colours, while areas of earlier overpainting and a historic wax lining required careful consideration during treatment. 

Although age-related cracking was present, the paint layer itself remained stable, so our conservation team developed a treatment programme focused on safely removing the aged varnish, stabilising the artwork and revealing the artist’s original colours and detail while preserving the painting’s long-term integrity.

Revealing the Original Portrait

Cleaning tests confirmed that the discoloured varnish could be removed successfully, allowing previously obscured colours to re-emerge. The blue tones of the dress became noticeably brighter, and subtle details within the face and expression began to return.

Throughout the project, regular updates and photographs were shared from the studio, allowing the restoration journey to be followed every step of the way.

What mattered most was preserving the familiar expression that had been known and loved throughout a lifetime. 

Returning Home

When the portrait was returned, it was rehung in exactly the same position above the sitter’s desk, with the original hanging arrangement carefully replicated.

The unveiling marked the culmination of months of conservation work, but more importantly, it represented the return of a cherished family presence. After seeing the completed portrait, the response was immediate and heartfelt:

“My mother is truly back and looking very much the 29 she was when this was painted in 1930.”

The restoration had not only revived the painting’s appearance but had also revealed details that had long been hidden beneath layers of aged varnish. The success of this project was measured not only by the technical conservation achieved, but by the emotional response it inspired.

Reflecting on the completed restoration, the following message was shared with our team:
