For three years, the owner searched unsuccessfully for another ginger jar like this one. That search speaks volumes about both its rarity and the emotional connection it held.

This particular example possessed a distinctive character. Its soft buttery-yellow ground provided a gentle backdrop for delicately painted lotus blossoms, graceful butterflies and two swimming carp, all framed by vibrant cobalt blue borders inspired by traditional Chinese decorative motifs. The lotus, a long-standing symbol of purity and renewal, combines beautifully with the carp representing perseverance, abundance and good fortune. Together, these elements create a harmonious composition that feels vibrant and serene.
Fortunately, almost every broken fragment had been carefully retained after the accident, with only a handful of tiny chips missing. This meant our conservators could undertake a comprehensive reconstruction using the Kintsugi approach, without the need for full recreation of large lost areas.
The Kintsugi Restoration Process
Every successful Kintsugi restoration begins with careful preparation. Each surviving fragment was individually examined, documented and gently cleaned before being painstakingly reassembled using conservation-grade adhesives. With dozens of irregular pieces to reunite, rebuilding the jar required exceptional precision to ensure every section returned to its original position.
Once the structure had been stabilised, tiny losses along the break lines were filled and refined by hand to recreate the vessel’s smooth profile. These fills were carefully toned to complement the warm appearance of traditional Japanese urushi lacquer before the defining stage of the restoration could begin.
