WhatsApp usOur studio is often called The Real Repair Shop… and if you’ve been watching BBC One this week, you’ll know why.
Just like in the famous barn, all sorts arrive at our door with a story attached: cherished artworks, family heirlooms and the kind of childhood keepsake that instantly makes you go, “Ohhh, I remember those!”
Some come with a clear problem; others arrive with a gentle “it’s been like this for years!” And either way, we treat every piece with the same meticulous care, whether our conservators have their hands on fine art or a well-loved treasure that’s priceless for very different reasons.
And because every great repair show needs a cast, we do too… ours are the real-world specialists who practise their craft every day (minus the cameras).
In our workshop you’ll find Sabrina, a meticulous easel painting conservator; Anna, our expert in modern and unusual materials; Tom, a cheeky chap with a brilliant hand for gilding; Matthew, our ever-cheerful art handler; Janine, your one-to-one client advisor; and Jenny, who keeps you updated throughout the process so you always know what’s happening and when.
And of course, our directors Chris and Anna, who make our studio a true family business; warm, welcoming and just as proud of the journey as the final reveal.
Of course, there is one big difference between the BBC barn and a working art restoration and conservation studio: we don’t have the luxury of TV time. On screen, a repair can feel like it happens between two cups of tea and a heartfelt chat, neatly wrapped up in a cosy montage. In real life, conservation is a little less “montage magic” and a little more “careful assessment, tiny tests, specialist materials and patient waiting while things dry, cure, settle… or generally decide whether they’re going to behave.”
Some projects really are quick wins, but many take days or weeks, because we’re not just aiming for a satisfying “reveal” as we’re making sure the object is safe, stable, and properly cared for in a way that lasts.
While The Repair Shop is famous for its wonderful craftspeople and remarkable heirlooms, our incoming items can be delightfully unpredictable. One day it’s an artwork destined for a gallery wall; the next it’s a decorative object with three different materials, two historic repairs, and one mystery sticky patch that definitely wasn’t part of the original design. We restore and conserve them all with the same approach: no judgement, just skill.
