Lawrence Alma-Tadema: History on Canvas

Lawrence Alma-Tadema remains one of the most admired painters of the Victorian era, celebrated for his elegant depictions of the ancient world and his extraordinary technical skill.

Our conservation team recently restored an oil on canvas by Alma-Tadema that had become heavily obscured by yellow varnish and historic contamination. Through careful conservation treatment, our team was able to reveal the original colour balance, detail, and atmosphere hidden beneath decades of deterioration, bringing the painting back to life while preserving its historical character.

This article explores the work of this classically-inspired artist, as well as the process behind restoring a vivid painting.

A Master of Victorian Antiquarianism

Born in the Netherlands in 1836, Lawrence Alma-Tadema trained in Antwerp before moving to London in 1870, where his classical subjects became enormously popular with British audiences. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1879 and knighted in 1899, cementing his reputation as one of the leading painters of the Victorian era.

Alma-Tadema’s paintings captured the Victorian fascination with archaeology, ancient artefacts, and the classical world. During the 19th century, wealthy British collectors and aristocrats increasingly turned their attention towards the ancient civilisations of Greece, Rome, and Egypt, often funding or participating in archaeological excavations across the Mediterranean.

This growing enthusiasm for antiquity heavily influenced Victorian art, collecting, and interior design.

At the same time, the British Museum was rapidly expanding its collections and reputation, becoming one of the leading centres for the study and display of ancient artefacts. Alma-Tadema frequently studied objects within the museum’s collections, using them to inform the architecture, costumes, furnishings, and decorative details in his paintings. His work combined careful archaeological observation with an idealised and romantic vision of the ancient world.

Alma-Tadema’s Style and Influence

Alma-Tadema became especially renowned for his remarkable ability to paint marble, rendering stone surfaces with extraordinary realism through delicate layering, subtle glazing, and carefully placed highlights.

His marble was not simply decorative; it helped create a sense of architectural depth within his classical scenes, bringing the past to life in innovative, vivid forms. This mastery became so closely associated with his name that he was sometimes called “the marbleous painter,” with polished stone interiors becoming one of the defining features of his work.

Among his most celebrated paintings are The Roses of Heliogabalus, Spring, The Tepidarium, Silver Favourites, and A Favourite Custom. These works demonstrate his skill in combining historical detail with atmosphere, beauty, and narrative.

Alma-Tadema’s richly imagined visions of antiquity also had a lasting influence beyond painting, shaping how the ancient world would later be represented in cinema, theatre and popular culture.

An Act of Charity

Our conservation team recently restored An Act of Charity, an oil on canvas by a follower of Lawrence Alma-Tadema.

Although Alma-Tadema is best known for his classical scenes, his early career also included medieval and Merovingian subjects, such as The Education of the Children of Clovis, Venantius Fortunatus Reading his Poems to Radegonda, and Queen Fredegonda at the Deathbed of Bishop Praetextatus. This wider interest in historical storytelling makes his influence relevant to An Act of Charity, which also draws on a medieval rather than ancient setting.

Tadema Restoration BeforeAbove: the painting before restoration with a discoloured surface

Before restoration, the painting was heavily obscured by perishing varnish and historic surface contamination. The aged varnish had turned yellow-brown, dramatically darkening the composition and flattening the original colours. Details in the stonework, sky, costumes, and figures had become difficult to see.

Following careful testing, our conservators safely reduced the discoloured varnish and removed embedded surface dirt. This revealed the original tonal balance beneath, including cooler stone colours, brighter fabrics, clearer facial details, and greater depth throughout the scene.

The transformation was significant. What had appeared dark and muted regained clarity, atmosphere, and colour harmony. The restoration allowed the emotional focus of the painting, the charitable gesture at the centre of the composition, to be appreciated once again.

Restoring Victorian Oil Paintings

Paintings influenced by Alma-Tadema often rely on subtle colour relationships, delicate highlights, and finely rendered textures. When old varnish deteriorates, these qualities can be almost completely hidden. Professional restoration helps stabilise the artwork, remove damaging or disfiguring layers, and reveal the artist’s intended detail while preserving the painting for the future.

Our team approaches every artwork with care, using conservation-led methods tailored to the individual painting. The restoration of An Act of Charity is a clear example of how sensitive treatment can revive beauty, depth, and character.
